The 12th International Conference of the African Materials Research Society (AMRS2024) will be held in Kigali, Rwanda.
AfricanMRS was formed in August 2000 through a US-Africa Materials Workshop which was held in Pretoria, South Africa. The workshop was co-organized and sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) and the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). This workshop sought to explore opportunities for collaboration between USA and Africa with an overarching objective of developing materials research capacity in Africa. This workshop brought together over 70 leading Scientists, Industrial Researchers and Government Representatives from the USA and 15 African countries. This well-able group of experts sculpted a forward-looking sustainable framework for driving materials research in Africa. Two years later, on 12th December, 2002, the AfricanMRS was officially launched in Dakar, Senegal in the 1st AfricanMRS International Conference were various world leading experts in the different facets of Materials Science, Engineering and Research were present. Subsequent biennial International Conferences have been held in South Africa (2003), Morocco (2005), Tanzania (2007), Nigeria (2009), Zimbabwe, (2011), Ethiopia (2013), Ghana (2015), Botswana (2017), Tanzania (2019), Senegal (2022) and the upcoming conferences by Rwanda (2024).
The Kigali AMRS2024 will draw participants from around the world, with an anticipated attendance of 500 people. At its heart, the AMRS series of conferences allows the scientific and research communities to build knowledge, foster relationships and promote action for further understanding and collaborations in the broad fields associated with materials science and technology.
The themes of AMRS2024 reflect both the needs of the global research community such as energy and health, as well as the needs that are specific to Africa.
AMRS2024 Conference Themes:
1. Materials for HEALTH
2. Materials for AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
3. Materials for ENERGY
4. Materials for BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE, WATER, AND SANITATION
5. Multifunctional Materials for MINING, MANUFACTURING, AND NEW DEVICES
